Using Ubersuggest for Keyword Research

Ubersuggest is a free SEO tool that does a great job of generating new keyword ideas. While it was originally founded as a tool that scraped Google Suggest terms, it was recently acquired by entrepreneur Neil Patel, who has expanded several features.

Getting started with Ubersuggest:  First, you should create an account by clicking create a free account. After registering, you will be brought back to the dashboard where the platform will prompt you to create a project.

Creating a project:  When the pop-up comes, you should add your website URL and name and then click Next.  The next window asks you to choose the location, which may be automatically filled in or require your input.

Finally, the platform will ask you to “add keywords to rank tracking”. Ubersuggest can add data from the Google Search Console and allow you to select the keywords from that list. The next step is to track competitors which have two tabs.

The search engine competitors tab pulls competitor data for your website which can be added to the box to the right. Click on Next when you’re finished adding competitors.

Using the dashboard: Once your project has been created, you will be redirected to the dashboard. To begin rank tracking, click on the tab named as such. This function pulls data from the keywords you added when setting up the project. This feature allows you to see which keywords have moved up or down in ranking, the average ranking position of each keyword and much more useful information.

Site audit: Clicking on the site audit tab on the lefthand sidebar will give you a broader view of your website or URL and the technical issues you should fix to improve its SEO. Select the domain or URL to begin auditing. You can get some stats for on-page SEO score, organic keywords, backlinks and organic monthly traffic.

Now that we have glossed over some of the important functions, let’s take a look at the steps needed to start keyword research.

Step 1: Go to the official Ubersuggest website and type in a keyword or phrase related to your topic in the search bar. Select the country and language you are targeting to continue.

Step 2: Ubersuggest will bring up a list of related keywords along wi their search volume, cost per click and competition. They will also provide a graph of the keyword’s search volume over time.

Step 3: You then have to narrow down your results by using the filters on the left-hand side of the page. You can use metrics such as search volume, competition CPC, and others.

Step 4: Go ahead and click on any of the keywords in the list to access more detailed information such as top organic and paid search results, estimated visits and SEO difficulty of each keyword.

Step 5: Next, use Ubersuggest’s Content Ideas feature that can generate new topic ideas for you based on your keywords. This feature provides you with popular articles and blog posts related to the keyword, along with the estimated traffic and social shares of each.

Step 6: Finally, use the site audit function to analyse the websites of your competitors. You can easily identify areas where you can improve your own site’s SEO.
